Choosing the Right Framing Lumber
SYP or SPF? Treated or untreated? A short, practical guide to picking framing stock that fits the job and the budget.
Pick framing lumber based on where it lives: untreated SPF or SYP for dry interior framing, and ground-contact treated lumber anywhere the wood meets soil, concrete or persistent moisture.
What's the difference between SYP and SPF?
Southern Yellow Pine is dense and strong, which makes it a common choice for load-bearing framing and floor systems in the Southeast. Spruce-Pine-Fir is lighter and straighter on average, which many crews prefer for walls and interior partitions.
When do you need treated lumber?
- Sill plates on concrete or masonry
- Deck framing, posts and stair stringers
- Anything within six inches of grade
